The present study examines the relation between EFL college learners’ reading motivation and reading comprehension. The role of gender plays in these two variables is also investigated. The research instruments involved one questionnaire and one simulated GEPT reading comprehension test at the intermediate level concerning reading motivation and text comprehension performance. A total of 224 college freshmen participated in the study. Through descriptive statistics, t-tests and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation analyses, the major findings of the study are summarized as follows:
1.Taiwanese college students were more extrinsically motivated to read in English, especially for favorable judgment, higher grades, and demonstration of superior competence relative to others’.
2.Female college students harbored stronger reading motivation in general and scored higher on the reading test significantly than did their male counterparts.
3.Gender was positively but weakly related to students’ reading comprehension.
4.There was a significantly high correlation between college students’ English text comprehension and reading motivation, in particular reading for social purposes.
