Through the studies of school history, it is found that many aspects of the school history can be discussed from different points of view and individual cultural differences of each school. The relativity and multidimensional characteristics of history therefore get testified. The true value of school history is not represented by the recording of historical events; but to bring readers back to the real life style and daily events of the past. In turn, the value of life is demonstrated. The Research of History of Taipei County Shenkeng Elementary School is based on the bottom up point of view of public history. Data was collected from oral interviews with principals, teacher, alumni, school staff, and from review of school publications and magazines so that the centennial memories of Shenkeng Elementary school can be recalled and reorganized. The video recording of the Assembly Hall, which is currently under construction, is a tool to arouse students’ involvement and passion when facing the historical events of their home school.
The studies of school history can also contribute in forming positive school culture and identity awareness. When a person’s ego be reconnected with daily living and broadened through an in-depth understanding, the individual will have a refreshed mind and a new meaning of one’s own life. In turn, the importance of school history and humanity tradition can be highly regarded in the campus; and the environment of dialogue and thinking can be naturally embraced.
The completion of this study can be viewed as a starting point of the efforts in compiling the history of Shenkeng Elementary School. “…the history emerged from the time. Yet, it could be lost without good recording,” said Mr. 久保信安in his book, who was a Principal of this school during the time of Japanese government. As a bridge of the past and present of Shenkeng Elementary School, may this study carry the unending dialogue between the past and the present.
