We human beings long for aesthetic experiences by sensory stimulations. Until now, music and painting have always been two most frequent art activities. Music is composed of rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, and tone color, whereas colors, lines, and space are incorporated into painting. There are many common elements existed between music and painting. Both of them employ different materials to convey perspectives, correlate closely with historical backgrounds, and reflect the styles and concepts of the culture at that time. In the late 19th century of France, Symbolism became a significant movement, and Correspondence theory was one of the most important theories of this movement. It promotes the use of symbols to communicate ideas, and the application of indirect methods, such as metaphor and hint, in order to connect art in different forms and indicate their relevance. After intertwining the effects of history, environment, and various ars, artists are able to create new forms with identical topics or concepts. By exploring the connections between Whistler's and Debussy's Nocturnes, I tried to clarify the correspondences between painting and music. Furthermore, I tried to apply Correspondence theory in my own artworks and compositions to create similar structures, contexts, and atmosphere concerning the ideas and values behind the two different forms of art. |
