This thesis is my introduction to, and an analysis of calligraphy. My objective is to explore and deliberate on the font, structure and meaning of Chinese characters in respect to transforming, and merging them into my own artistic expression. In addition, the thesis presentation will seek to show how calligraphy can clarify an inner vision of life by means of using Chinese characters. I will examine the combination of the creative elements of calligraphy, the techniques of using ink and wash painting, and attempt to explain my point of view about calligraphy as a tool of expression by researching and discussing my work.
Chapter 1 and 2 are an introduction, outline, and purpose statement of this research. Discussions are based on the origin of Chinese characters and the nature of Chinese words. With reference to the symbolic thoughts of pictographic Chinese characters along with calligraphy art, these 2 chapters aim to search the unique structure form of Chinese characters and their underlying pictorial expression.
In the final part of this thesis, I elaborate on my approach to calligraphy which is based on the finding of the pictorial meaning of Chinese characters to be the performance form of my work. Starting from the single design of each Chinese character and associating it with different words to express my life experience, I try to combine the aesthetic tendency in denoted Chinese characters, and the vision I have of my life, into artwork. Therefore, I can confront future difficulties and bitterness that might occur in life by being aware that beauty expressed through sight, subjective ideas, and ugliness of other things I've experienced through the way I presented the Chinese characters.“Living in the moment”-- Myself and others who view my calligraphy can relate it to our lives by putting the sorrow and regrets of life as well as joy and satisfaction in perspective.
