Abstract This thesis would mainly investigate the prose works of contemporary writer, Lin Wen-yi, analyze the creative viewpoint of his literature, features of his, and creative theme of his prose, explore the artistic content of his prose, and attempt to mark out the features of Lin Wen-yi in contemporary prose creation, his achievement, and his importance. The work is made up of six chapters, and the first chapter is of the “introduction” which will elaborate the motif of research, and purpose of the research. Then, it will conduct literature review and arrange the research achievements by experts and scholars until today. At the end, it will define the research scope and explain research methodology. In the second chapter of “life process Lin Wen-yi,” it will begin with solitary childhood of the writer and his schooling life. During his days as student, he had great fondness for painting and writing, but his likings were not accepted by his parents. Therefore, his dream for literary writing continued to increase as opposed by his parents. During the days when he was serving the military terms, his talent as writer was gradually witness in the literary circle, and he had his personal prose anthology published. When he began to work, he was forced to stop writing for two yeas as life constrains. When he once again began to write, his work “Thousand-hand Guanyin” was awarded China Times Literary Award in 1979. Then he began to travel, and he would like to observe Taiwan through traveling, and his work has well demonstrated such realistic style. Later on, when he served as the parliament office director for Shi Ming-the, he had to temporarily stop writing and his literary creation was interrupted. Afterwards, he was invited to work in TV, and he would demand himself to comment on events of the times with great objectivity as well as the heart of compassion as a literary writer, and he was invited to host literary broadcast program and travel program. In the third chapter of “ Viewpoints of Prose Creation by Lin Wen-yi, “ we have his viewpoints of prose creation classified into four categories: expression of personal sentiments, reflection of reality, pursuit of inspiration from travel, and literature as conscience career. Lin believes that it is most important that writer should have create works that “touch people realistically,” “record as they are,” and “be honest to readers.” And he further proclaims that writers should reflect reality, and should not bow down before reputation and interest as what writers should do is how their conscience guides. The fourth chapter is “period classification and modes of motif on prose of Lin Wen-yi,” and the chapter will classify, based on formation of his literary process, and different creative belief and writing expression, his works as the period of romantic and fancy thoughts, objective and realistic period, matured and harvest period, and the period of expanded attempts. On one hand, writing prose is the creative features during early days of Lin Wen-yi, and with his personal experiences grow he has shifted from pure romantic aestheticism to socially realism, while his works have demonstrates such humanitarian concern to love for the indigenous community. As such, there are, aside from expression of personal concern, more of the literary styles for environmental protection, political concern, and historical interests. In 1999, he has shifted to the writing of realism fiction, and he has, when he is over 50, strived over the new horizon for the creation of novel poetry. In the fifth chapter of “artistic content of prose by Lin Wen-yi,” this paper has resorted to reference of rhetoric and criticism theory of prose, and attempt to extract the artistic content of Lin Wen-yi, which ranges from “concise form, rich content,” “abundant description, expanded imagination,” “intensive image, good at portrayal, “expression of view through object” to discuss the artistic content of Lin’s prose as he is so well versed using image making use of poetry, and Taiwanese songs into his works. With such unique ways and styles of writing, and words that are full of musicality and colorfulness, he has interlaced his works with poetry so as to create the atmosphere created by prose. Furthermore, he has rendered his works of writing with diagrammatic composition of images with colorful phrases, in combination of his identity once as comic strip writer, he has also introduced song lyric and colorful phrases, turning the tempo of his prose as integrated with image beauty. In the prose creation of Lin Wen-yi, he has made use the interpretation of humanism the phenomenon of realistic landscape, and while his travelog demonstrates his observation of the community, while his criticism is found hidden in his comments on the dynamic changes of the community, historical changes, and life mode of the people. In the 6th chapter of “conclusions,” it has noted that Lin Wen-yi has been writing for more than 30 yeas, and Lin believes that literature is the last virgin land of human soul. As can be viewed, travel and recollection have helped make up his sources of creation, while the modes of creativity have expanded from prose to fiction, and poetry. However, Lin has always retained his consistent way of meditation for life throughout, while his style of writing has then become more profound and turned one to deeper reflection. From the perspective of creation, he is considered to be a prolific writer, and is given with abundant vitality as he is most willing to attempt something different.
