The target texts of this research are novels written by Lee Ang before 2004, and the aim is to discover and arrange the depiction of ghosts and demons in her novels. Lee Ang grew up in Lukang, and her works were deeply influenced by that township environment. Thus, gloomy atmosphere, folklores, and integration of folk legends are frequently seen in her novels. Ghosts and demons appear to be illusory, obscure, and unreal. Ghosts represent “yin”, which is a contrast of what the society see as the correct path “yang.” In Lee Ang’s recent works, ghosts are the main characters. She utilized the abovementioned features of ghosts to make various metaphors and contrasts, and, also, to elaborate on feminine and political issues that she cares. The purpose of this research is to investigate the origin and threads of thought of the depiction of ghosts and demons in Lee Ang’s novels. Moreover, texts that conform to the definition of “the depiction of ghosts and demons” were analyzed with an aim to come up with different interpretations on Lee Ang’s novels and provide insights to feminine literature and contemporary literature. There are five chapters in this paper: Chapter one (introduction): introduce the motivation, aim, and method of research, review the previous literature, and explain the definition and scope of “depiction of ghosts and demons.” Chapter two (overview of Lee Ang’s works and ideas of writing): review the biography of Lee Ang, her ideas of writing, and previous novels. The objective is to discover the thread of thoughts in her depiction of ghosts and demons. Chapter three (the origin and performance of the depiction of ghosts and demons in Lee Ang’s novels): summarize the depiction of ghosts and demons in classical and contemporary novels, explain why Lee Ang used these metaphors, and collect and rearrange the paragraphs in her novels. Chapter four (discussion of the depiction of ghosts and demons in Lee Ang’s novels): two novels that conform to the scope of this research were analyzed in order to understand the application of ghosts and demons in Lee Ang’s novels. Chapter five (conclusion): summarize the results of the research, illustrate its applications and reflections in teaching, and elaborate its values and offer suggestions for future research.
