Abstract Regarding the “Headline assonance with a double meaning” that has been numerously used in the recent news media, most of people are used to it. However, for the elementary students under the learning stage, “Headline assonance with a double meaning” is not interesting for them anymore. Due to the lack of teaching materials, it causes misunderstanding and typo when students are facing this type of special rhetoric. Do the authors and teachers of Chinese literature realize this fact? In the past, there are not that many books studying “Headline assonance with a double meaning” in news media and it’s even less studying on teaching elementary “Headline assonance with a double meaning”. Therefore, in this thesis, I collect all the definitions related to assonance and ambiguity from each individual rhetoricians, and try to analyze the “Headline assonance with a double meaning” showing in the top five news letters during 2007 November to December. I also investigate the example of assonance and ambiguity in the Chinese literature publishers, 康軒, 南一and翰林. Based on the testing result from students, I propose some specific suggestions for assonance and ambiguity teaching materials improvement. I hope this can bring the teaching of elementary Chinese literature into the next level.
In conclusion, the thesis is based on three categories to analyze the current teaching circumstance on “Headline assonance with a double meaning”, including rhetoric – definition analysis, university newspapers – newsletter headline collection, and elementary school teaching resources – the teaching materials collection.
