This essay is aimed at discussing both the progress and result of NIE(Newspaper in Education) applied to fifth to sixth grade primary school students through the teaching practice. Meanwhile, this essay analyses how NIE influences students’ writing and other language skills. The research for this essay focused on the discussion and learning sheets which had been done by thirty-one sixth-grade students. Newspapers were adopted as teaching materials for seminar and writing class. By analysing students’ works, teachers’ reflections, records and data, the results are found and listed below:
1. Students’ writing skills would be improved by involvment in NIE (Newspaper in Education) practice. Students who attended the NIE project have made high progression in note taking, writing, organising, verbal expression and concluding skills at the end of the course.
2. The NIE project helps students to think creatively and builds good learning attitudes. Students became more actively with self-study, collecting information, taking notes and self-examination. In addition, they learned how to convey their ideas and look at news issues in different aspects.
3. Well-designed NIE programmes and various resources are suitable for students. Students’ language skills would be promoted by long- term NIE teaching programme which provide varied news articles in different subjects and flexible teaching methods.
