The purposes of this study were to compile a social studies curriculum integrated with community resources and to examine students’ learning results, the difficulties during implementation and solutions. The study was based on action research and made use of observation to record every aspect of teaching process. The observation tools included video recording, photos taking, recording, students’ portfolios, teachers’ reflection journal, students’ self-evaluation sheets, classroom observation sheets. The data collected along with pretest and posttest results were then analyzed. The founding was as follows:
1. Diversification of curriculum activities helped to maintain students’ learning interests. 2. Integration of community resources into social studies was best enhanced through careful planning. 3. Instructors should possess knowledge of community history to integrate community resources into social studies. 4. Integration of self-designed learning sheet into learning attitude evaluation sheet helped students understand learning goals. 5. Integration of community resources into social studies enriched students’ life experience. 6. Integration of community resources into social studies helped students know communities better. 7. Integration of community resources into social studies was not able to enhance students’ affection to communities. 8. Insufficient teaching time was a big challenge for self-designed curriculum. 9. There was insufficient manpower. 10. The exercise and coordination of community resources influenced the flow of extracurricular trips.
