This thesis points at the research on the literary theory of “The Short Story Magazine” in the reformatory period(1920~1931). This thesis, comprising of five chapters with appendixes included, aims at having insight into its literary Concept and connection with the prevailing trend of thought during this period. Chapter One: Introduction. This chapter contains three sections: firstly, the explanation of research motives and purposes; secondly, the definition of the period’s division and the research spectrum; thirdly, the discussion of related literature and the analysis of former study results. Chapter Two: The literary view of The Short Story Magazine. This chapter aims to illustrate the literary opinions of The Short Story Magazine in the reformatory period. Firstly, we analyze the literary view with the theory of evolution and discuss its rightness to speak for times literature. Secondly, we discuss how and what to present the truth on the basis of literary ontology. Thirdly, we compare the difference between literature for life’s sake and art for art’s sake, and find out its times function. Chapter Three: The creation of The Short Story Magazine. In this chapter, we analyze its common opinions of the literary creation. According to the writers’ moral cultureand the writings’ art formation, we discuss the creative regulation of literalism aesthetics established by The Short Story Magazine and the creative formation of writings in vernacular Chinese, and then find out the practical way of teaching new literary creation. Chapter Four: The stylistics of The Short Story Magazine. In this chapter, discussing points are aimed at the definition of new literary style and creative opinions in the reformatory period. Then we illustrate the aesthetic requisition and the language style of novels, poetry, prose, and dramas. Lastly, we discuss the development and practice of its literary view points. Chapter Five: Conclusion. This chapter draws on the summation of its tolerant, perpetual key value resulting from the discussing interaction among The Short Story Magazine, other literary journals, and groups. At last, there is much hope to further research the new literary creation by means of referring to the literary theory.
