The influence on reading comprehension performance of different Picture-Word Representations apply on elementary school students with different prior knowledge- In the Case of” Topography” and “Water Cycle” The Purpose of the the influence on reading comprehension performance of different Picture-Word Representations apply on elementary school students with different prior knowledge- In the Case of” Topography” and “Water Cycle”. This study adopts a 3 × 3 („combinations of articles and figures‟ × „levels of prior knowledge‟) two-factorial experimental design. The experiment subjects (N=184) are the sixth-grade elementary students which learnt basic knowledge about “topography” and “water cycle” in the fifth year of elementary school. The experimental materials “Reading Material of Topography and Water Cycle with different Picture-Word Representations” will be developed referring to the social studies textbooks for the seventh graders published by Hanlin, Kang-hsuan and Nan-I. Other two research tools will be developed by this research. First is the “Reading understands the difficult screening examination”. Based on the scores, students are divided into three groups with different prior knowledge. Second is the “The reading comprehension performance Exam of Topography and Water Cycle”, this tool is reference from Pearson and Johnson(1978) “Three Level of Reading Comprehension Theory”. Students will take it after the experiment. And the data will be analyzed with two-factor ANOVA. Meanwhile, face-to-face interviews are utilized after the experiment to understand the preference of students on different Picture-Word Representations and the process of reading comprehension. 1. There is no any interactions between “Difference of Picture-Word Representation ” and “Prior Knowledge of Students”. 2. There is no any interactions between “Difference of Picture-Word Representation ” and“ reading comprehension performance”. 3. There is interactions between “Prior Knowledge of Students” and“ reading comprehension performance”.
